Classroom Centers

1. Computers:

In this area, the children will explore activities and educational software on the computer.  The staff and children will also work together to create projects with both words and pictures.

2. Art:

This center is the focus for many young children.  Here, they will have the opportunity to explore a variety of art mediums.  There are paints, colored pencils, and collage materials to use in the creation of their masterpieces.

3. Math:

This area is more than just numbers.  Children will work on logical thinking skills such as problem solving in measuring, counting, and puzzles.  The activities are rotated so children have a variety to choose from on a daily basis.

4. Science:

Science is important to growing minds and the development of cognitive thinking.  Children will find answers to many questions they have about the world around them.  How do magnets work?  Which items float, and why?

5. Blocks:

This is a favorite area for most children.  Block play is a great muscle activity.  By adding other props such as cars, animals, and boxes to projects, your child can extend this center to bounds limited only by their imagination.

6. Dramatic Play:

Here children learn by emulating adults in a variety of roles. Favorites roles are, Mom and Dad, doctors, and grocery store workers.  Role playing helps children develop language and social skills needed in everyday life.

7. Language:

A quiet, "homey", area  with big comfortable chairs becomes a place to look at books with staff or friends.  Books can also be added to any area to extend the learning.  A book on numbers added to the math area is one example.

8. Music and Movement:

Music is a wonderful way for children to explore their creative side.  Most enjoy creating songs and dances. There is also a variety of instruments such as drums, bells, or maracas, to enhance their musical learning adventure.

9. Sensory:

Children are drawn to things they can touch or feel.  This center allows the opportunity to experiment with different combinations of substances and textures.  A hands-on approach to a variety of substances such as sand, rice, water, and bubbles allow your child to experience the different properties of each.

10. Large Motor:

This area contains many different types of indoor and outdoor play items.  As a group, children can bounce balls, play with parachutes, walk across balance beams, travel around the floor on scooters, and create obstacle courses.  This is a room separate from the main classroom and will be used for those days when we just can't go outside due to the weather.
